Baseball Pitches and Pitching Mechanics

How many pitches do you think you need to throw to be a successful pitcher?    That is a question I get as a pitching instructor time and time again.    It is a very valid question as your job as a pitcher is to keep hitters off balance.    You know you can’t keep hitters off balance with just one pitch, especially if you are playing at the Major League Level.    One exception to this rule and one only, is Tim Wakefield who throws that nasty knuckleball.    However, unless you are Tim Wakefield you will get crushed if all you throw is one pitch.

I teach my pitchers an additional pitch, usually a split finger fastball or a changeup, when they have very good command of their fastball and they have great pitching mechanics.    Without proper pitching mechanics there would be no reason to try and attempt to throw another pitch.

A pitcher should have at least three pitches in their arsenal that they can throw at any time for strikes.    Many pitchers will ask me to teach them an additional pitch even after they know three of them.    I usually won’t teach them another pitch unless they really don’t have what it takes to throw one I have taught them; a circle change is a good example of that.    I love to throw and to teach the circle change.    However, many pitchers struggle throwing the c-change or circle, so I will teach them a different changeup to throw while they are learning that one.
