How to Throw a Cut Fastball

Since the goal of pitching grips is to create deception, the cut fastball fits the bill quite nicely.  This pitch really acts like two-pitches in one.  A straight fast ball mixed with a slider.  The ball comes out of the hand with a fastball rotation and then quite near the plate it "cuts".  For a righty pitcher it will cut into a left-handed hitter, and for a lefty pitcher it will do the opposite for a right-handed batter.

While many pitching grips are tough to get the feel of, the cut fastball is much the same.  Grip this pitch like you would a regular four-seam fastball but bring your thumb up in the inside of the baseball a little bit.  Remember, a regular fastball grip has your thumb underneath the baseball.  Lastly, position your middle and index finger close together.  When your grip is right, this will be like throwing an off-center fastball.

The purpose of throwing a cut fastball is to move the ball off of the barrel of the bat at the last minute.  A hitter will see a fastball coming at him, but will have difficulty detecting the last minute break to the pitch.  Lastly, here are a couple tips to remember when experimenting with the cutter pitching grip.

#1 - As mentioned above, a lot of different pitching grips take a while to get used to.  Just learn to experiment with different amounts of pressure with your index and middle finger on the baseball.  You'll find the right combination of pressure that will allow you the most amount of control.

#2 - Make sure that you are aware of where the baseball is placed in your hand.  You don't want the cut fastball grip deep into the palm of the hand.  You will want this pitch to leave your finger tips at the last minute to get the rotation you need.

Lastly, it's ok if you never learn this pitch well, there are plenty of others you can learn.  You only need three good pitching grips to become highly effective.  Take a look at our Pitching Grips 101 for more in depth information on the top grips in baseball.
